Pet Insurance Basics, in Plain English
Pet insurers typically sell three kinds of coverage: accident-only, accident and illness, and wellness coverage (NAIC).
| Type | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Accident-only | Injuries such as swallowed objects or broken bones; no illness coverage. |
| Accident & illness | Injuries plus illnesses; the most common "full" plan. |
| Wellness | Routine care like vaccines and checkups. Under the NAIC model act, a wellness program is separate from an insurance policy and must be clearly distinguished from it (NAIC Model Act). |
Pet insurance is technically a property and casualty policy, with exclusions, deductibles, and payment limits (NAIC).
